Having last finished top of the pile under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, the Red Devils have been also-rans in the competition since. It has been the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City emerging as the teams to beat in the English game instead. However, United have overcome a shaky start to put themselves firmly in the title race, and the wait for England’s crown could be coming towards an end.
United, who are 6/1 to win the Premier League title with Space Casino football betting, made a stuttering start to the season under boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A 3-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace, was soon followed by a 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham at Old Trafford. This was followed by a draw against Chelsea and defeat to Arsenal, before United seemed to turn a corner with a decisive 3-1 win at an ever-improving Everton. The Red Devils have not really looked back since.
That tough start to the campaign, and coming through it, might well have taught this United squad a few lessons and it’s a credit to Solskjaer for guiding his troops through a difficult spell. Now the men in red look to be showing the quality they have been promising for a couple of seasons, and could well be there in the title race come the business end of the season.
One man who knows all about winning Premier League titles, having won the competition no less than 11 times, is Paul Scholes. The former United playmaker managed to win a total of 25 trophies during his career, and now the ex-England international is seeing some promising signs from the current crop of players at Old Trafford.
Scholes has admitted it “feels strange to say it, but I actually do think United can win the league because it’s been such a weird season”. However, the United icon was keen to point out that his old club must come out on top in the big games against fellow title contenders if they are to really make it.
It’s true that Scholes and other former Manchester United players, including Gary Neville and Roy Keane, have not pulled their punches when it comes to talking about the quality of United teams of late. There does now seem to be a shift in the thinking, with the Red Devils showing grit to come from behind in so many of their games this season.
While United have been able to put away Newcastle and Leeds convincingly this term, many of their wins have come by a single goal. Scholes and other United backers will be hoping the trend continues as they look to secure their once familiar place at the top of English football again.
