UK online tax return reminder: The deadline is 31 January 2018

Here are some points to assist in the submission of the online tax returns before the deadline of 31st January 2018.

Just do it!

It’s not fun but it must be done. Online submissions often lead to the site crashing, when entries are submitted all at once. Last minute entries create a bottleneck of information that is trying to make its way through the server.

Be prepared

Make sure that you have the right information on hand. Failure to fill in the correct information could result in penalties which could end up being costly and which will take more time to be processed.

Now’s not the time to guess

Don’t guess with the information that needs to be submitted. You can phone HMRC to ask advice, but everybody else may also be phoning and this could prove to be time-consuming. Make sure that you read through the information that is required very carefully. You’ll be glad you did.

Don’t make mistakes

Be sure to claim for the correct benefits/marriage couple’s allowance/children’s etc.

Your work vehicle

If you use a vehicle for the purpose of business and are not fully compensated, be sure to claim the excess i.e. 45 pence for the first 10000kms & 25 pence for the balance.

Use the correct allocation codes

National Insurance class 4 contributions can be forgotten, other than PAYE and class 2, for self-assessment. Be sure to inform HMRC of these calculations in the right allocation codes.

* Bear in mind that if they were to submit the necessary information on a client’s behalf, an agent’s tax code has to be requested first, and this might not be done in time before the deadline. This is a security process and necessary, due to identity fraud.
