HEAD of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia, Dr Anna Gray, is to present this year’s Menzies Lecture at the King’s College London Menzies Centre for Australian Studies next Tuesday 30 April 2013.
Dr Gray, one of the co-curator’s of Australia (opening at the Royal Academy in September 2013), will trace the development of Canberra as a cultural capital in her lecture titled Building Australia’s Cultural Capital 1913-2013.
It will discuss the creation of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library of Australia and the Australian War Memorial, against the backdrop of Canberra’s history and development as our national capital took shape.
Dr Grey has been Head of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Australia since 2001. She was formerly the Director of the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Head of Art at the Australian War Memorial, Education Officer at the Art Gallery of Western Australia and Arts Officer with the East Staffordshire District Council.
She has curated around 40 exhibitions, and written widely on Australian art, including editing Australian Art in the National Gallery of Australia (2002) and essays for The Oxford Companion to Australian Military History (1995), Australia’s Empire, Oxford Companion to the British Empire (2008) and The Cambridge Companion to Australian Art (2011).
Dr Grey is currently a Research Fellow at the Menzies Centre for Australian Studies.
Building Australia’s Cultural Capital will be presented at 6.15pm on Tuesday 30 April 2013 in the Council Room at King’s Building, Strand Campus at King’s College London.
