THE premiere of Les Miserables in Sydney stopped thousands of shoppers in their tracks, as Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe walked a red carpet that ran the length of Pitt Street Mall.
Christmas shopping was temporarily forgotten as Les Miserables held its Australian premiere in the heart of Sydney’s CBD shopping district on Friday 21 December.
A red carpet ran the length of Pitt Street Mall, allowing shoppers and fans lining the walkway to catch a glimpse of stars Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe before they made it to their final destination — the State Theatre.
Stopping to talk to Kerri-Anne Kennerly on a platform halfway down, Crowe ruminated on days past where he used to busk in Pitt Street Mall and Kings Cross.
“I’d make $50 to cover rent then, enough for fried rice and a packet of cigarettes. Those were the days,” he said.
The black tie affair was also attended by guests including Kate Ritchie, Jessica Mauboy, Jackie Weaver and Michael Caton and members of the original cast of the Australian stage production.
