Whenever you move to a new area there are things to consider. If you are planning to embark on a new life in Australia, there are a few practical tips that will help to make it a bit easier to enjoy your new home once you are there.
1) Weather
In Australia, summer is between December and February. Although severe storms strike regularly, summers are generally hot and dry. Australians typically wear a hat outdoors and sunscreen that is at least 30 SPF or higher as sunburn is virtually guaranteed without it and skin cancer awareness is high. People from the northern hemisphere all too often underestimate the sun’s strength in Australia. Do what the locals do. Of course, the hot and dry weather just makes it more necessary to hit the beautiful beaches and enjoy a few water sports.
2) Water
When you are visiting beaches in Australia, it is important that you note the use of water safety flags. Red and yellow flags indicate the safe area of the surf in which to swim. Swim between the flags. Most beaches in urban areas are patrolled by the famous lifesavers; follow their advice and you will be safe to swim and enjoy other activities.
3) Electricity
Australia uses the 230V 50Hz electrical supply. Those coming from abroad can use plug adapters but it may be best to replace those plugs if you are planning a long stay in Australia.
4) Crime
Crime is about the same in Australia as you would find in other developed countries, particularly in larger cities. As always, keep your personal belongings close to you when on outings to avoid being targeted by thieves and pick-pockets. Never leave valuables alone on the beach when you swim.
5) Holidays and Business Hours
Trading hours in Australia are about the same as other countries. Most begin at 9am and end at 5pm. Stores and businesses in larger cities do typically stay open until 9 pm as do supermarkets. Major holidays celebrated include Christmas, New Year’s Day and Easter. Australia Day is celebrated on January 26th and ANZAC Day is celebrated on April 25th. Victoria also celebrates Melbourne Cup Day on November 1st, which is a racing event at Flemington Racetrack. It is world-famous and is literally known as ‘the race that stops a nation’. All states also celebrate the Queen’s Birthday, but at different times.
6) Emergency Phone Numbers
The emergency services number in Australia is 000. Much the same as 999 in the UK, this is a free to call number and will enable you to reach emergency departments such as the police, fire department and medical assistance.
7) Tipping
Tipping is not required in Australia although like everywhere else, when you receive good service it is a kind gesture to offer a tip. The 10 percent goods and services tax (GST), which is the equivalent of VAT in the UK, is added to restaurant bills automatically in Australia.
