Japanese Encephalitis is extremely rare in Australia but has now become unprecedented in the region. Individuals who are in the eastern regions of Australia are particularly at risk.

An investigation is still underway to find the origins of the virus. According to the Department of Agriculture, when the virus came to Australia is uncertain.
